Project funded by
 The SciCOFish project provides a reliable and improved scientific basis for management and decision making in oceanic and coastal fisheries, giving P-ACP countries the means to develop efficient management measures, the skills to monitor their effectiveness, and some important tools to combat IUU fishing on the high seas.
The oceanic activities provide scientific support for new tuna management initiatives adopted by P-ACPs at a critical time for conservation of the stocks, in particular, intensive observer training and enhancement of national fishing activity databases.The coastal activities are focused on projects combining an urgent resource management issue with a strong local capability to address the issue and maintain a long-term programme.

Support to Fiji’s Offshore Commodities Taskforce
 The Fiji Offshore Commodities Taskforce met for the first time on 18 February 2011. The meeting aimed to facilitate stakeholder involvement in offshore fisheries activities, and a wide range of stakeholders (representatives of industry, processors, non-governmental organisations) attended this first meeting.
Graham Pilling, Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) Fisheries Scientist, made presentations on the global and regional status of offshore fisheries development and the performance of Fiji’s tuna longline fleet as compared with that of the regional tuna longline fleet.

Observer training course for longline gear
 A ten-day observer training course for longline gear was conducted in Apia, Samoa from 31 January to 11 February 2011. Of the 15 participants, 14 were certified: eight from Samoa, five from French Polynesia and one from Cook Islands.
The trainee trainers were Benaia Bauro (Kiribati) and Kevin Kisekup (Papua New Guinea ). Manoi Kutan (Papua New Guinea Training Coordinator) also attended and assisted with this course and Malo Hosken (SPC Research Assistant on biological sample collection, processing and analysis) provided biological sampling and tag recovery training.

SciCOFish first Steering Committee Meeting
 On the 28 February 2011 was held the SciCOFish first Steering Committee Meeting. The objectives were to advise and inform the P-ACP representatives and other steering committee members of the following:
- Overview and expected results of SciCOFish Project;
- Progress report for 2010, year 1 of the project;
- Outline work programme for 2011, year 2 of the project.

FSM tuna fisheries database audited
 An important activity planned as part of the SciCOFish project is the improvement and integration of national tuna fisheries databases, which includes conducting regular audits of national systems to ensure data quality is maintained.
A better overview of national fisheries
Bruno Deprez, as the SPC Fisheries Data Audit Officer, visited Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), from 6 to 16 March 2011 to conduct the first in-country data audit on the FSM National Oceanic Resource Management Authority (NORMA) database.
