The oceanic activities provide scientific support for new tuna management initiatives adopted by P-ACPs at a critical time for conservation of the stocks, in particular, intensive observer training and enhancement of national fishing activity databases. The coastal activities are focused on projects combining an urgent resource management issue with a strong local capability to address the issue and maintain a long-term programme.

Fisheries overview in Timor Leste

timor_fish_1Timor Leste comprises the eastern half of the island of Timor; the island of Atauro and the Oecussi enclave on the north coast of Indonesian West Timor. The north coast of the main island is characterized by a narrow fringing reef, dropping off sharply into deep water.

Most of the catches in this area comprise small pelagics – round scad, sardines, juvenile tunas – caught mainly with nets around FADs (Fish Aggregating Devices) and with light attraction. Fishers deploy their own FADs using bamboo ‘payao’ style rafts. Some catches of reef fish are also seen on the market in Dili, however.
