Capacity building

Supporting capacity development and enhancing capability in fisheries and aquaculture across the Pacific Islands

We provide scientific expertise and technical assistance to support fisheries management and sustainable development in the Pacific. At the core of our work is our commitment to develop professional capacity in the region. Our team of experts are dedicated to ensuring that fisheries officers and personnel in SPC member countries are equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to supporting, as well as using, the scientific and technical work that we produce.

We work with people at all levels: from government officials, fisheries officers, and community members. The support we provide is therefore very broad and ranges from formal training courses to mentoring and workplace training and attachments. Driven by the COVID-19 pandemic, there are now more opportunities for members to engage in online capacity development activities. While the preferred method for knowledge sharing is face-to-face, remote support has also allowed us to be able to respond more quickly to requests for technical assistance and training.

Some of the scientific work that we do requires an immense input from members in terms of data collection and experimental design. We work with members countries to identify their specific needs as well as training staff to contribute to the science needed to advance fisheries management in the region. We also offer training to Pacific Island countries and territories (PICTs) for requests which are in line with national or regional priorities, or to help with an emergency or emerging issue. Members can make formal requests directly to FAME outlining the specific priority need in an email to [email protected]
